Oakland County planners want area to be more bike-friendly

City planners in southeast Oakland County have joined with fit people in black spandex to say it’s time to make the area dramatically more bike-friendly.

A Bike Summit is scheduled at the Royal Oak Public Library on Wednesday where planners and cycling advocates will talk about bike-friendly efforts in Berkley, Birmingham, Clawson, Huntington Woods, Madison Heights and Royal Oak.

“We’re starting to make some very real progress,” said Todd Scott, 49, a Royal Oak resident who is to speak at the summit. He cycles to the bank, shopping and meetings for his job as Detroit greenways coordinator for the statewide nonprofit Michigan Greenways and Trailways Alliance, which promotes nonmotorized transit, and drives his Chevrolet Sonic “just every other day,” he said.
