Action Alert: Stop Rand Paul from Slashing Bike-Ped Funding

July 26, 2013 |  By John LindenmayerUntitled-1

The Transportation Alternatives program is under attack in Congress, with a new amendment calling for key funding to be wiped out entirely.

Help us maintain the TA program and the vital local control provisions that help build bikeable and walkable cities and towns. Take action now.

Last year’s MAP-21, the federal transportation bill, dismantled dedicated funding for biking and walking by consolidating programs and slashing overall funds by 30 percent. The silver lining came in the form of a local control provision that ensured that Mayors and communities could access the remaining dollars to support local transportation projects.

Bike Law University: Riding Under the Influence

Bicycling under the influence laws are very rare, often times leaving a gray area in the law. league-logo

In this edition of Bike Law University, we take a look at BUI laws and how they’re implemented across the country. BUI laws provide specific penalties for bicyclists that are found to be riding while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In most cases, BUI laws differ from Driving Under the Influence (DUI) laws by providing for less severe penalties and by not affecting a person’s driver’s license.

LMB Featured on Michigan Radio’s Stateside

Whether it’s commuters who are sick of rising gas prices, the hipsters moving into urban areas, or empty-nester baby michigan_radio_logoboomers seeking fitness, the bicycle is growing in popularity. Cycling tripled nationwide from 1990 to 2009, and that growing popularity is reflected here in Michigan.

But it’s not just riding for fun or fitness. Cycling can impact the way our communities look, and impact policy and infrastructure at the state and local level, as well.

PrintYes, due to popular demand, it’s back and better than ever!! Our 2012 race was another HUGE success with 125 teams taking turns racing around the Tree Farm. We are hard at work planning the 2013 race, and we expect to have more fun, more surprises… and hopefully great weather!!!

We are shaking things up this year by adjusting the start of the Sport class to help with the initial congestion on the trail. Plus, we are adding a mysterious “Other” category. Stay tuned for details on that…. maybe!

Sunrise 2013 a Vibrant Success!

LMB and 100 cyclists from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Canada took over Alpena for Father’s Day weekend in June for a great three days of sun, fun and bicycling! While exploring northeastern Michigan, riders attended the Wooden Boat Show in Presque Isle, visited the oldest and longest serving bartender, Clarice, at the Maplewood Tavern and stopped at Rich’s favorite shop, Two Dough Nuts.

On Friday, riders had an opportunity to cross the 45th parallel twice on Friday, after climbing Mt. Moriah and traversing around Hubbard Lake. Riders also had the opportunity to stop at Connie’s Cafe for a massive, delicious cinnamon roll. The ride into town took the riders past the band shell, where a concert would take place on Saturday.
