Sunrise 2013 a Vibrant Success!

LMB and 100 cyclists from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Canada took over Alpena for Father’s Day weekend in June for a great three days of sun, fun and bicycling! While exploring northeastern Michigan, riders attended the Wooden Boat Show in Presque Isle, visited the oldest and longest serving bartender, Clarice, at the Maplewood Tavern and stopped at Rich’s favorite shop, Two Dough Nuts.

On Friday, riders had an opportunity to cross the 45th parallel twice on Friday, after climbing Mt. Moriah and traversing around Hubbard Lake. Riders also had the opportunity to stop at Connie’s Cafe for a massive, delicious cinnamon roll. The ride into town took the riders past the band shell, where a concert would take place on Saturday.

Saturday saw the riders head north to Presque Isle county and the Wooden Boat Show. With a SAG stop out front, riders got to see the Maplewood Tavern twice, where Guinness Book of World Records bartender Clarice works. Once back in town, riders cleaned up for dinner with many heading over to the band shell for the Concert in the Park. Another sunny day in the books!

Sunday dawned gloomy with rain clearing out early, but much of the morning was cloudy and cool. No one’s spirits seemed dampened by the weather and highly enjoyed the police-escorted bike parade along the Thunder Bay River. By the time that everyone rolled into the finish, the sun was shining to bid everyone a kind farwell to Alpena.

Each day saw excellent meals provided by Fremont Catering, but the volunteers who staffed our SAG stops really put on all the bells and whistles for several wonderful oases along all routes, all three days. LMB wants to thank everyone who participated, whether you rode or were a volunteer, thank you for making our 7th Annual Sunrise Bicycle Tour a huge success! We’ll see you in Alpena next year!9091679473_f4bf72655b_b
