BOBBY AND THANE TACKLE THE TRANSAM Day 16; Berea to Harrodsburg

Day Sixteen Thane’s Blog: im a little lost fox but i think thats awesome (i call my wife fox, now do u get it)

Thursday May 16, 2013, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 837 miles (1,347 km)

It’s nothing new for us but today we missed a turn or took a wrong turn or the map was wrong (yea, that’s it). Any way you shake it, we spent some time this morning in the tiny town of Paint Lick Kentucky and I am here to tell you it was awesome.

As we rolled through town we started chatting up one of the locals. He said his name was Don and proceeded to invite us into his woodworking shop. This craftsman was totally old school and his eyes lit up with every piece of furniture he showed us. I actually heard the pieces of wood lying around his shop talking about how happy they were to be in such incredible hands.

After about 30 minutes of amazement Don shook our hands and pointed us back on the path. I am so, so stoked we missed a turn this morning. Its moments like these that I was hoping to find along this journey. And it made the fact that we totally screwed up again and got lost a lot easier to smile about.

Most of the day we were traversing over rolling hills with beautiful farms full of Black Angus beef cattle all laughing at us as we cycled by. We were also being chased by a thunderstorm. Luckily for us it only wetted our whistle for a little while. I was stoked about not having to suit up in the rain gear again. Well, we got a few days of cycling without getting totally soaked and I’m thankful for that.

We were told by our cycling guru friend from our home town Fred Werda who has traveled this route more than once that a stop at a family restaurant in Burgin for lunch was an absolute must. This stop should be a must for every single cyclist on this route. Not only was the food awesome but as we were pigging out another transamer named Bob (Ruff Stuff Bob) from England noticed Boo and Chester chatting out front and he pulled in.

We laughed and swapped stories and decided to maybe ride together for a while. I really love the fact that cyclist just kinda meet and ride and share the love of cycling. All freaking haphazard.

I guess we traveled about 54 miles today. Mostly rolling farmland with no true climbs. Some sections of road pitched upwards of 12% but it seemed that each time I got into the rhythm of the climb it came to an end.

Tomorrow we will be heading to a little place off route in a tiny town called New Haven. We will have a nearly 70 mile day ahead of us! So I guess I better get this old ass to bed.

Day Sixteen Bobby’s Blog: Fast and Furious

Thursday May 16, 2013, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 837 miles (1,347 km)

Oh Yea, a new lease on the ride today. Breakfast at the Marathon station consisting of Pop Tarts, chocolate milk, and conversation with the truck driver delivering goods to the store.

Had an absolute wonderful day in the saddle with the mountains of VA and Eastern KY behind us we had smooth sailing on to Harrodsburg. Roads consisting of big rollers through beautiful countryside. What I like about rollers is the momentum built going down usually carries you almost to the top and with a little fancy gear work one can break over the top without a lot of effort.

We did miss a turn and end up off route a little in Paint Lick, KY where we came upon this quaint little wood shop where a bodger (english term for wood turner) was on the sidewalk to greet us with a welcome to Paint Lick. When we saw the post office we knew we were off route. And the bodgers smile told me that he knew we were off route as well.

He then invited us into his world of wood. This man is a true craftsman from Whales and was more than happy to show off his talent. His shop looked like a bomb went off in it but I’m sure it was just the way he liked it. The deeper we got into his lair the more I became aware of the smells that mixed together. A combination of wood chips, wood smoke and cooking grease. I loved it.

What a gem Don is. He is the real deal. Thane asked him if he used a computer and he said my wife has a computer and I have a hatchet. She is a professor at Berea college.

After a tour of the grounds and a refill of the water bottles he loaded our bikes into his trailer and gave us a lift back to our route.

We then continued on toward Burgis when thane began to yell stop. We were abreast of the Rocky Top furniture company whom Thane’s business sells wood to. What are the odds of that. So another tour of a wood shop was in order. Great day.

Leaving out of there we were headed to a restaurant in Burgis that was suggested by our close friend back home Fred Werda. As usual Fred was spot on and the place was wonderful.

It was there that we spotted our new friend Tuffstuff Bob from Idol, England. His first visit to the U.S. and and made it the TransAm. What a delight he is. It was decided right away that he should hook up with the Yanks and ride for a spell. I just couldn’t be happier. Laughing is my favorite thing to do and Bob supplies plenty of it. Not everything is meant to be funny but his delivery is hilarious. (really I think it’s just the accent)

So we are in our room in Harrodsburg and all is well on the happy road.
