BOBBY AND THANE TACKLE THE TRANSAM Day 64 Powell to Kooskia

Day Sixty Four Thane’s Blog: down, down, down

Wednesday July 3, 2013, 88 miles (142 km) – Total so far: 3,461 miles (5,570 km)

We were told by a couple cyclists that we camped with last night that today’s cycling adventure would be nearly all downhill. They said it was a slight downhill but a downhill none the less. The two dudes from the other side of the pond were absolutely right.

What a glorious day to be cycling through Idaho. My computer read slightly over 90 miles covered today. Nearly all of it was flanked on the left by the incredible white noise of the Lochsa River and beautiful sheer cliffs of rock and pine trees on the right.

The temperatures again flirted the 100 degree mark but the only time you really felt the heats intensity was when you stopped cycling. As long as you kept pounding the water the world was an incredible place to be in today.

We had a rather bizarre thing happen today about 40 miles into the journey. We stopped at a ranger station to refill our water bottles. We parked our bikes at the base of the steps that lead up to the building. Hung out there for about 15 minutes then climbed back down the steps to find two of our bikes had now become the new home for a swarm of bees.

I put my brave face on and ran into that mess. Rescued the bicycles and ran like a scared rabbit down the road. Had a few land on me but didn’t get stung once. Booyyyaaahhh.

After another 50 miles or so we pulled into the town of Kooskia. Found a really cheap motel with air conditioning and simply chilled out for a few minutes before starting the daily tasks of blogging, uploading photos, finding the local laundry mat and the all-important……….. Taking a freaking shower.

You can be damn sure, after 90 miles in that much heat a shower is of the utmost importance. !

Wednesday July 3, 2013, 88 miles (142 km) – Total so far: 3,461 miles (5,570 km)

Had lots of company this am when we broke camp. The two Brits Tom and Mike who are going East,Kevin from NY who is heading West but is young and much faster than us were all packing at the same time. First time we have had anyone up that early. (4:30am)We had a great time in the Lodge last night swapping stories from the road and some not from the road that I will not mention here.

We had a wonderful 88 mile ride almost all down hill today with the Lochsa River singing to us all the way to Kooskia. I know that the camera can not do justice to what we have been blessed to view on this ride today.

Although the temperatures were right around 100 and we had to ride 66 miles for our first chance at breakfast it was worth it. I managed to put down a chicken fried steak, two eggs, hashbrowns, side order of bacon, coffee, and last but not least a large slice of homemade coconut cream pie. Man I’m gonna have to change some of this around when I get back home.

Our original plan was to over night in Syringa but we decided to push another 16 miles to Kooskia as we have a climb tomorrow and decided to shorten that day up a little.
