BOBBY AND THANE TACKLE THE TRANSAM Day 74 Coburg to Monmouth

Day Seventy Four Thane’s Blog: that is sick isnt it

Saturday July 13, 2013, 58 miles (93 km) – Total so far: 4,156 miles (6,688 km)

We deviated from our normal schedule today and slept in an extra hour. For our efforts we truly paid the price as the day went on. Mother Nature told the wind to wake back up and the wind said ok.

Today, our entire 58 mile journey to the city of Monmouth was due north. The wind speed and direction at 7 am this morning was 15 mph. Straight out of the North! By 10 am the speed was averaging at least 20 and gusting much higher.

What I am about to say may sound sick but after a couple hours of this I actually thanked Mother Nature. That is sick isn’t it? After the chaos and brutality of cycling in winds of 35 mph back in Kansas and Wyoming I learned a little about cycling in wind. And on some level I embraced the challenge it provided again today.

The weatherman has informed us that tomorrow’s winds will be exactly the same as today. Since our route is primarily North with a little West we are expecting to once again hear the white noise howling in our helmets again tomorrow.

If the map is accurate we might get our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean tomorrow. Booyyyaahhh. Booyyyaahhh indeed.

Day 74 Coburg to MonmouthNo rest for the wicked last night. We stayed in the RV park in Coburg and brother what a night it really was. Between the toddler crying and the trucks in and out of the truck stop next door and the street light across from my tent I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep.I think some of it may well be that we are so close now to the finish and I may be experiencing some anxiety about the ride being over and seeing my wife and dogs after being away so long. I think when I get home I will need a week to decompress.

Today was really an uninteresting day. Flat all day but a pretty stiff headwind thrown in for good measure. No matter what gets thrown at we always seem to get in some laughs. That I will miss when we finish.

Tonight we are staying in Monmouth and tomorrow we have a seventy mile pedal yes to the coast. Pacific City will be our overnight.
